The People Helping People Network — founded in 2000 by Jeff Cardwell and based in Indianapolis — connects people and organizations together to change lives, break the cycle of poverty and provide hope. The holistic HOPE Equation (Housing + Hunger Relief + Healthcare + Education x Faith = HOPE) is the formula that delivers lasting transformation — uplifting people, families and entire communities. It’s main proving ground has been in El Salvador, where The People Helping People Network has been a huge catalyst for change and self-empowerment in a nation where families and communities are embracing the hand-up to better lives. Author Chris Johnson is a veteran journalist who has been compiling stories over the past few years about the inspiring people and partners who make the work of The People Helping People Network possible. His work is featured in this collection of profiles. (Released July 2024)

NOTE: All proceeds go to the work of The People Helping People Network.

My first “with Chris Johnson” book explains the mission and principles behind The People Helping People Network,” a nonprofit that does a lot of work in El Salvador, and I had the opportunity to visit the country for this project. (I’ll visit again in fall 2023.) The book has been highly received, and its endorsers include former Vice President Mike Pence:

Jeff Cardwell has been my friend for more than 30 years, and I am always inspired by the way his People Helping People Network empowers families and communities to end the cycle of poverty around our country and across the world. As illustrated in the success stories throughout this book, “The HOPE Equation” works, giving people the resources they need to help themselves — and that is what facilitates real, lasting transformation.

Jeff Cardwell and Chris Johnson seamlessly tell the story of how The People Helping People Network was birthed in a single moment of God-given inspiration and how it continues to set a new standard for nonprofit effectiveness. I know you will come away inspired and determined to do your part to build a better world by the faith, work and example of People Helping People!

(Released 2023)

Why would the legendary Bigfoot be on little Hyde Island? That’s what Beau and his new friend Abby are trying to figure out during their summer vacation between seventh and eighth grades in this breezy, light-hearted young adult novel. When her widower dad relocates from Chicago to an island just off the Georgia coast, Abby hits the scene with a heavy dose of smarts and snarky humor, which complements the freewheeling goofiness of her next-door-neighbor Beau, who knows every inch of the island. The two attempt to chase down the legend and find out why giant footprints keep showing up every time something on the island disappears, meeting a host of quirky characters along the way.
