Going in front of the TV camera

There was a brief period in my life when I did 1-minute commentaries for a Columbus television station’s Friday night newscasts. Other newspaper columnists gave serious TV commentaries Monday through Thursday, so I guess they wanted to lighten things up by giving the local nutjob a chance to change the pace going into the weekend.

I never wanted to do it — I was told to do it. The only thing I really enjoyed about that was seeing the anchors’ faces when the camera returned to them after my commentaries. The expressions seemed to say “I can’t believe he just did that” and then they’d sign off awkwardly.

But I don’t mind getting in front of the camera from time to time to tout the good work other folks are doing, as you can see in this WMAZ-TV feature from earlier this week:
